Sunday Shoutouts: Smashing the Patriarchy

So apparently I haven't blogged since last week's Monday Mentions. Oops. I've been busy editing and scheduling guest posts for when I'm on vacation. But at least y'all will have a lot to read while I'm gone!

Just a heads-up for blog comments for the next few weeks. A month or two ago, I turned off anonymous commenting. My spam comments had skyrocketed from 1 or 2 to upwards of 10 a day. I will continue to keep anonymous commenting disabled until I return from vacation... BUT I will turn off comment moderation while I'm gone! That way, you don't have to wait for me to approve your comment before it shows up.

With that announcement over, onto the good stuff!

Most Powerful Video: Ready to cry? I came across this intense video on tumblr about bullying. It shares the perspective of both the bully and the bullied. I hope that you will share this video with any teachers, parents, and other adults who interact with children.

Happiest Video: I love Frozen. I especially love the song "Love is an Open Door." These parents lip sync to it perfectly! And their daughter is totally oblivious in the background.

Best Religious Takedown of Patriarchy: I absolutely adore Rachel Held Evans. I'm almost done reading her book A Year of Biblical Womanhood, which has inspired me so much. Her blog is equally inspiring. This week she wrote a post called "Patriarchy and Abusive Churches" in which she points out the patterns of abuse in churches with strict patriarchal hierarchies.

Best Academic Article: So... I don't actually know if this is a legit article or not, but I'm calling it an academic article because it's good enough to be one. The writer analyzes Romans 16:7 to determine if a) Iounian is male or female and b) if Iounian is an apostle or just known to the apostles. The writer analyzes the historical and scriptural evidence of both sides to draw the conclusion that Iounian should be translated as the feminine Junia, who was an apostle.

What did you read this week?

Thanks for reading and commenting!

Anonymous commenting disabled while my mom is sick.

Comments are moderated because I receive a lot of spam, and I think CAPTCHA is annoying. I reply to most of your comments within the comment section because it inspires discussion between readers. For first-time commenters, I try to reply by email.

Yes, you can comment anonymously. Yes, you can disagree with me.
