Friday Book Club: Bonus Edition!

Two weeks ago, I was SO excited to write a weekly book review and link up with HeatherMegan every Friday. What perfect inspiration to read a new book every week and to keep track of everything I read!

But as much as I love blogging, there is something (someone) I love more.

The boyfriend. :)

WHO SPONTANEOUSLY VISITED ME LAST WEEKEND!!!!!

As in, he bought a ticket Friday afternoon, left work early, and drove straight to the airport with nothing but the clothes on his back.

So basically I was too busy floating on air last Friday to write a book review for the AWESOME book I'd finished earlier that week for my book club.*

But hey, I'm back, and excited to post my review for Book Club Friday! Since I missed last week, I will be regaling y'all with TWO reviews. Oh, yeah.

A Tale of Two Nerds in Two Cities

So I kinda want to talk about love and sex and Valentine's Day and all that good stuff. But with this whole "moving to Canada" thing looming over me, I don't know if I'll have the time to write out a beautiful, funny, thought-provoking post of my usual brilliance.

Instead, I'll do a little something different. A picture post!

For all you lonely singles out there, take comfort in knowing this is how some of us in relationships will be spending the holiday.

Trying out my V-Day prezzie from the boyfriend!
I am completely and totally serious when I say that cool little things that let me use my smart phone outside in the cold are WAY better than roses or chocolate. #nerdromance

Watching Glee with my oldest child!

Nothing says love quite like watching the super-special Valentine's Day episode of my FAVORITE SHOW OF ALL TIME with my oldest child. Who else just melts when they watch this video? #aupairlife #Glee

Skype date with the boyfriend... with new lingerie. #longdistancesolutions

Seriously, it's going to be like any other Tuesday night when I get a little worked up watching Glee, and the boyfriend enjoys the benefits via skype. I just happened to buy a new bra & panty set. And before you start judging me and thinking my choice is pretty vanilla, let me remind you that my boobs are probably bigger than yours (or your girlfriend's), and my band size is probably smaller. Finding lingerie stores that carry my size are very difficult (the smiling salesperson at Victoria's Secret this summer hadn't even heard of my size). I look hot in this. And it actually gives me the support I need. Win-win.

I was going to send the boyfriend a handmade card, and an assortment of candy, and a loofah,* but then he spontaneously visited me this weekend. He distracted me from making him a card and buying him candy... But he did take the loofah back home with him! Score!

*His is this ancient, falling apart rag of a loofah. So I bought him a new one. It's just a little thing, but seriously, his old one was soooo torn up.

Guest Post at "How to Lose Your Virginity"

Confession: I have been holding out on y'all for awhile now. Therese over at "How to Lose Your Virginity" aka one of my favorite blogs, contacted me back in December to write a guest post for her.

I replied with the proper mix of decorum and enthusiasm, but y'all should have seen me bouncing off the walls when she asked.

Because it's not just any old blog, but the blog to promote her documentary-in-progress by the same name.

"How To Lose Your Virginity" Trailer from Trixie Films on Vimeo.

So you understand the sheer amount of squee that just had to ensue when she emailed me, right? It's like, the most suitable person ever to read (and like!) my blog.

After several emails back and forth with Therese, the theme of my guest post emerged. It discusses where I've drawn the line with sex, and why. Shockingly, it's even more personal, raw, and honest than anything I've written here.

So please mosey on over to read "Two Become One: A Naked Look at Virginity."

And then leave a comment there (or here) with you thoughts, reactions, etc. Like how I'm a brilliant writer, and you want to give me a book deal.

Don't look at me like that. I can't help that I'm both brimming over with confidence and that I'm willing to work hard to make my dreams come true.

P.S. Remember when the boyfriend visited me a few weeks ago? Yeah, we also met up with Therese for an interview that weekend. Because we're ridiculously open about our non-sex sex life and totally comfortable discussing it on camera. Plus we're super-cute together. Like, borderline obnoxious.

Friday Book Club! (The Book Thief)

Confession: Reading is basically my favorite thing to do in the whole world. The other day, when the ten-year-old boy I watch asked me what I would like to do more than anything, I said read with the boyfriend's arms around me. Which, sadly, we haven't managed to do yet. Edit: The boyfriend pointed out that he has read with his arms around me... But I was napping both times.

As part of this awesome past time, I am happy to announce my first-ever book review!* It's Book Club Friday!

This week I finished reading The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. I'll be honest with y'all. This is not the sort of book I normally would have picked out for myself. However, I had heard good things about it, and more importantly, it was on the bookshelf of my oldest child when I desperately needed a new book to read.

It was pretty damn awesome, I'm not gonna lie. I'm so glad convenience convinced me to read it.

The Book Thief follows Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich during World War Two. Throughout the book, she forms strong--sometimes unlikely--friendships with the other characters.

I'm not going to reveal who the narrator is, although it's obviously one of the first things you'll discover upon reading this novel. Still. The choice in narrator is pure genius.

It should go without saying, but books are a huge theme of the novel. I understand Liesel and her growing love for words. One of the parts I loved best about this book was the coming-of-age element illustrated by Liesel's relationship with books.

I don't cry often when I read, but tears streamed down my face when I finished this novel. That is one of the highest compliments I can give to a book.

Stay tuned for next week's edition of Friday Book Club. I'll be reviewing Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

*Not my first ever book review, mind you. I have dozens at my personal blog. Just my first one here.
