I think Beau's proposal and our months of wedding planning was our best-kept secret from the blog. My motivation for the secrecy was two-fold.
- I wanted to control the narrative of my own story of sex and virginity. I didn't want to force the blog conversation before I was ready.
- I thought announcing our wedding by linking this video was HILARIOUS, and so did both Beau and my best friend Lauren. That was actually planned before we even got engaged.
I present to you...
July 7, 2011- First Contact (aka Beau messaged me on okcupid!)
July 29, 2011- First Date
August 4, 2011- First Kiss
August 26, 2011- First Skype Date
September 2, 2011- Beau drunk-texted me.
October 16, 2011- Beau asked me to be his girlfriend!
Thanksgiving 2011- Beau and I first said "I love you."
December 17, 2011- Beau and I kissed at an iconic place with the legend that couples who kiss there get married. He intentionally kissed me there and said, "We'll have to wait and see if the legend comes true." That night we attended the wedding of two friends who had shared their first kiss at that place.
February 10, 2012- Beau took a last-minute flight to visit me in New York. He showed up without even a carry-on bag.
So romantic! My family claims this Big Gesture was when they knew he was the One. |
May 18, 2013- I gave Beau a powerpoint presentation on why we should start premarital counseling.
June-July-August 2013- Beau and I completed the online course of Marriage 101, and we both read two books.
October 20, 2013- Beau asked me to marry him!
November 30, 2013- Beau and I took engagement photos near my hometown.
All the cute pictures of Beau and me in the last several months have actually been our engagement pictures. |
January 1, 2014- Beau moved into our rental house.
February 9, 2014- My friends threw me a bridal shower!
February 22, 2014- I moved in with Beau.
March 20, 2014- Beau and I met with the minister of The Little Church of La Villita. Then we ended up being interviewed by a reporter for a news segment about saving the church's food pantry.
March 22, 2014- Beau and I got married in San Antonio with our immediate family in attendance.
March 24-April 1, 2014- Beau and I honeymooned in Puerto Rico!
April 5, 2014- Beau and I celebrated with my friends and family in my hometown at our first reception.
April 26, 2014- Beau and I will celebrate with his family at a lunch reception and with our friends at a dinner reception, both held in the Small City where we now live.
As y'all can see, these past few months have been a whirlwind of activity, and we're not done yet! But after April 26, I still won't be able to rest because we put "unpacking and moving in" on hold to finish our wedding prep. We still have boxes of my stuff everywhere, and very little of our art is on the walls.
But what's most important is that I love falling asleep next to Beau almost every night. When I think about how amazing it is to live with him and be his wife, the messy house just seems less important. ♥
Linking up with Nancy J and Mary for Wedding Wednesday!
*I've always casually used the Midwest to refer to where we live. From now on, Big City will refer to the state capital where I lived for a year and a half, and Small City will refer to where we live now, which is about an hour and a half away from the capital. Lauren and Hardy both still live in Big City, and we visit them (and stay with them!) often.
first off, thank you again for sharing my blog and all the love you give for it! that means the world.
ReplyDeletei admit--i was shocked at your marriage. not at the act, but that it came out of nowhere. i was expecting posts on emotions of how you feel now that you're about to lose your virginity and the anticipation. but it's your blog and you do what you want---and this was just right!! congrats my love!!
I think I mentioned in the comments that one thing I don't like about bloggers who offer "sponsorships" is that they stop linking to other blogs they genuinely like. I LOVE promoting kickass bloggers, and you're one of them!
DeleteI'm actually glad you were shocked! I dropped a few tiny hints (like instagramming a close-up of my dress a few days before the wedding!), but for the most part, our lips were sealed on the whole thing. The only people who knew were the few blogging friends who know my real name and follow my real twitter/facebook. I'm very grateful they kept my secret!
I'm obviously super-honest about my sex life and how I feel about it, but all the extremely personal posts I've written were after I spent weeks (if not months or YEARS) processing my feelings first. I needed these five months or so to work through my own feelings on what it would mean to get married have S-E-X for the first time, and I had to work it out on my own before I could write about it. BUT I have tons of blog posts discussing it all planned for the future, plus we did a follow-up interview to the documentary "How to Lose Your Virginity" just two days after our wedding. That will go up on their website soon!
Ha, I love that you have sneakily been using your engagement pictures and I never would have guess it! x
ReplyDeleteYeah, I had to choose each one carefully to make sure it only showed my grandmother's ring on my right hand, NOT my engagement ring on my left hand. I actually wondered if anyone would ask why I suddenly had really nice pictures of the two of us, especially since my hair is straight in those pictures AND I'm wearing makeup. But I guess having beautiful pictures is a blogger thing, and everyone forgot that I usually don't have beautiful pictures to share!
Deleteawwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!! This is so lovely and such a romantic post!!
ReplyDeleteThanks!!!! And thanks for keeping our secret all this time. ;)
DeleteStopping by from Wedding Wednesday! Happy almost ONE MONTH!!! So exciting! Xx.
ReplyDeleteawww well hello! Thank you so much for joining the linkup! This is such a cool story - and bravo for being able to keep it a secret! Looks like 4/26/14 will be special days for both of us! :)
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to all your posts! I am curious I just found my dress and it's short but now I feel conflicted because it's short and not at all traditional. I absolutely love your dress and just wondering what your thoughts were when your buying it.
ReplyDeleteI was specifically looking for a white dress in a "fit and flare" style. I think Unique Vintage technically classifies this dress as a "swing dress," but the cut is very similar to "fit and flare." I knew I wanted a short dress partly because I knew our wedding would only have 10 guests, our parents and siblings. The idea of wearing a big formal dress in front of only 10 people seemed silly. When I remembered this dress (I've had it bookmarked in black on my computer for years), I knew it was the one. I sent the link and size to my mom for the dress and petticoat, and she bought them immediately.
DeleteYour wedding is your wedding. We did some traditional stuff, and we did lots of non-traditional stuff. I'm big on the whole You Do You kind of thinking. You will be most beautiful if you feel like yourself, short dress or otherwise!
the fact that you gave Beau a PowerPoint presentation to justify marriage counseling makes me love you even more. :)
ReplyDeletealso! do you live in Texas now? perhaps a blogger meetup is in the future if you do.
